Redmire, population c500, lies in a sheltered position on a minor road from Wensley to Askrigg. Large central greens, bounded by historic houses, give the village much of its character. Lightfoot House is indicated by the red dot on the aerial photograph (right). There is a small shop/post office and a pub, the Bolton Arms, which serves good food and cask ale. The old railway line that once linked the east coast line to the Settle/Carlisle line has now reopened from Leeming Bar to Redmire as the Wensleydale Railway, running period diesel trains. There is a small 12th century church, situated down a narrow lane about ½ mile from the village centre. There are numerous footpaths around the village, offering easy walks to Redmire Force on the River Ure and the 600 years old Bolton Castle, at the nearby village, Castle Bolton. All offer splendid views of this part of Wensleydale.
Day long walks directly from the village can be undertaken on Penhill to the south, or across the grouse moors to the north, where a lead mining history can be explored. Many of the fields still retain their medieval ridge and furrow plough patterns and some of England’s finest cultivation terraces are clearly visible adjacent to Bolton Castle. Ordnance Survey map OL30 is essential.
The quiet roads are generally suitable for cyclists and Redmire lies close to the Yorkshire Dales Cycle Way.
Within a few miles are Aysgarth Falls, on the River Ure, Hawes with its creamery making Wensleydale cheese, and the small market town of Leyburn that offers excellent food shopping and a range of facilities including tourist information.
